JD Vance claims Haitian illegal immigrants are abducting and eating pet cats

JD Vance has claimed illegal immigrants from Haiti are abducting and eating people’s pet cats.
Trump’s 2024 running mate took to X to slam Vice President Kamala Harris, the border czar, for “draining social services and generally causing chaos all over Springfield, Ohio” for the influx of Haitian immigrants.
He also claimed the Caribbean immigrants fleeing from gang violence and political instability – who he explicitly says “shouldn’t be in this country” – were “abducting and eating” people’s pets.
Vance’s post was in response to a viral claim in a Springfield Facebook group in which someone claimed their neighbor’s daughter’s friend lost their cat and found it hanging from a branch at a Haitian neighbor’s home before being carved up to be eaten, according to the Springfield News-Sun.
However, Springfield police confirmed Monday morning there have been no reports of stolen pets.
Springfield has seen a surge of migrants from Haiti that has been rocked by natural disasters, political assassinations and gang rule in recent years.
The Facebook rumor went viral on social media. Several other Trump-endorsing Republicans politicians and figures including Ted Cruz and billionaire Elon Musk reposted the unsubstantiated claim.
“President Trump will deport migrants who eat pets,” a Trump campaign account posted to X. “Kamala Harris will send them to your town next. It added: “Make your choice, America.”

The border is a central campaign issue for Trump, who has explicitly vowed to enact the “largest deportation in US history” as part of his zero-tolerance border policy.
During his RNC speech, he clarified his two priorities if re-elected are to close the border and drill for gas domestically.
The Harris campaign has accused Trump of ordering his congressional loyalists to shut down the bipartisan border bill presented earlier this year for political survival during his presidential re-election campaign.
